  17. DESCRIPTION
  18.        These programs keep  the  netnews  overview  database  for
  19.        newsreaders up to date.
  20.  
  21.        Initov  creates  the database initially by reading all the
  22.        articles under uunews:.  This takes a long  time  (on  the
  23.        order  of  12  hours, in late 1992), and can be avoided by
  24.        letting domkov incrementally generate a database  for  new
  25.        articles as they arrive; after a week or so, most articles
  26.        should be in the database.  The news system should not  be
  27.        locked when initov is run; initov takes care of the neces-
  28.        sary locking internally,  and  deals  with  articles  that
  29.        arrive  while  it is running (primarily by deferring their
  30.        processing to domkov).

  32.        Domkov is run from newsrun(8CN).  It updates the  database
  33.        files  from  the  header stream produced by relaynews(8CN)
  34.        for new articles.

  36.        Mkov normally reads a stream of  RFC  1036  headers,  with
  37.        those  of  each article separated from those of its neigh-
  38.        bours by an empty line,  from  files  (standard  input  if
  39.        none)   and   writes   a   summary   in   the   format  of
  40.        newsoverview(5), but with a field containing the article's
  41.        news  spool  directory  name  relative  to /usr/spool/news
  42.        prepended, on standard output.  -a reads articles  instead
  43.        of  a header stream (but ignores filess which are directo-
  44.        ries or have names which do not  resemble  article  names,
  45.        i.e. do not have a leading digit on their last component).
  46.        and omits the initial directory name  field;  -n  requests
  47.        the  initial  directory  name  despite  -a; -o causes only
  48.        articles older than the file stamp to be summarised.

  50.        Expov should be run after expire(8CN) (and  is,  by  doex-
  51.        pire(8CN))  to  delete  database entries for missing arti-
  52.        cles.
